LOCATION:

Tihany is among the oldest known settlements at the lake of Balaton , its Abbey was built almost 1000 years ago. The village of fishermen and peasants has survived the centuries, and it is currently one of the most popular tourist destinations in Hungary . The village is situated on a small peninsula that penetrates the lake from the north. The peninsula was likely created by volcanic activities, and most of its territory belongs to protected environmental areas, national parks. On the peninsula there are two smaller lakes on the hills, not interconnected with the Lake of Balaton . These lakes are primarily reserved for the wildlife, although the larger one offers good opportunities also for the sport fishermen.

One can find the old village on the top of the hill, not far apart from the historic church and monastery buildings.

THE CSARDA:

Is located on the north of the village, about 300 meters from the Abbey, right across the bus parking. The construction of the building dates back to about 1800, and it is the oldest csárda in Tihany. (The Hungarian word „csárda” means something like a highway inn, where besides the food and drink usually some kind of entertainment, namely the traditional Hungarian Gypsy Music is also provided.) Over the years terraces were added to the old building that offer a wonderful panoramic view on the larger lake of the village.

The csárda has been furnished with handcrafted rustic furniture, local linens and pottery.

It offers a unique environment, second to none at the Lake of Balaton .

 

Seating Capacity. We can accommodate up to 185 people in the building that can be complemented with the 165 seats on the terrace. Weather permitting our combined seating capacity reaches 350 persons.

The Menu Card

naturally features fish, primarily the famous fish of the Balaton, the fogas , that is also in the csárda's name referred to. (The fogas is a delicious carnivorous fish in the lake, quite a bit similar to the

walleyes living in North America .) The Tihanyi Halászlé (Fish soup specialty) and the world famous Hungarian Goulash Soup are also among the most popular dishes offered. Further to these our menu card offers a wide variety of beef-, pork-, venison-, and poultry dishes, as well as dishes created to satisfy the needs of our vegetarian or juvenile guests.
